The 2003 Blackout

Where were you during the 2003 Blackout? How did it affect you?

We were watching only the best t.v. show ever (The Amazing Race) when the power went out. After realizing that the power wasnt just going to come back on, we went outside and tossed around a baseball and chatted with the neighbours. It was fun.

I was at the airport of all places! Had just been dropped off and it was chaos! Flights were all cancelled and I had lost my ride back so I waited a few hours and shared a taxi to my sister's place where everyone was on the front lawn having a party. The stars were incredible that night.

I was working for the Ottawa Lynx AAA Baseball Club at the time. It was going to be our biggest crowd of the season - 25 cent hotdog day at the ballpark. Over 10,000 hot dogs were in the midst of being cooked when the power went out. The game was cancelled. I must've eaten 8 hotdogs - I couldn't let them all go to waste...

My co-worker and I were going to the pub for a beer after work when we noticed the traffic lights not working. As always there were treated as four way stops. No thinking much about it when we got to the pub, the lights were out there also.. Lucky I had some cash on me as the debit was down, and it was cash only.

A person in the bar was talking to someone on his cell phone, and he was informed that London, Kitchener, Toronto, and other areas were out also.

I remember telling my co-worker that it must be bigger than we think, and the power probably won't be on for a while if its that big..

He lives in an apartment, so he figured on staying at the bar and eating there as he could not cook at home. As for me I live in the country and we cook on wood outside most of the time, and I have a summer kitchen set up out back so I decided to go home and power up our freezer and fridges.
(Especially the beer fridge).
I went home, and plugged my heavy cord into my van's 1200 watt inverter, and branched of from a power bar in the house to the freezer and fridge, sat out back enjoying a cold one, without a care.

It was the end of my work day and I was picking up a new car ...so not realizing how big the blackout was I went to complete the transaction. They couldn't use the photocopier for the documents they needed but they let me take the car with the promise i'd return the next day to complete the forms ...how cool was that of them! Needless to say it was a couple of days later before I was able to finish that.
...at my work i was on-call that week - our office was on the emergency power grid so came into work around 4 a.m. got our necessary computers up and then along with everyone else went home for the day and enjoyed a good book!

Sometime between leaving work and getting home is when we lost power. A couple hours later of listening to my battery powered shower radio and I realized we weren't getting power back any time soon. In getting to know my neighbours because it was now way too hot to stay in the apartment, I learned that they weren't worth getting to know. They were more worried they wouldn't be able to buy their lottery tickets than about food. Thankfully I had a can opener and a camping BBQ. Unfortunately even though we had no power I still had to go to work every day since we ran on generators.

I was getting married. I have a great story now, but was pretty stressed at the time. We ended up with a candle lit mass, and my friend singing acapala. It was so beautiful--something I would never have had with power.

I was at a singing contest. Once the power was out for a few hours friends and I headed to a bar in Hess Village that was handing out glow-in-the-dark necklaces and serving beer on the patio.
